A Closer Look at The Art of Moonalice Poster M472 by Chris Shaw

A classic in the Chris Shaw Poster release that will also appeal to David Nelson Band fans is from the show on May 11, 2012 at Mt. Tabor Theater in Portland, Oregon. That night fans were treated to both bands, and also M472 in the Moonalice series by Art Director Chris Shaw.

We recently caught up with Chris in his studio where he shared an uncanny look into his process to create this fine work of art. The first step was to create a thumbnail of the concept, pictured below:

After the thumbnail had marinated in Chris’ mind, he started sketching out the art. After many hours, the final pencil sketch is completed:

The art is then reproduced in ink so it can be scanned for use on a computer where Chris Shaw can also give it some digital design love:

A technique that Chris used to give this poster an organic touch, was to make a light blue print out of the original inked art so it can be used in conjunction with a lightboard to produce additional layers.

Another classic featured in the Chris Shaw Poster release is from the September 24, 2011 show at the Humboldt Hills Howdown in Redway, California – also known poster M412 in the Moonalice series. At a recent visit to his studio, Chris shared the original pencil sketch with us.

Once the sketch is complete, it gets inked, before getting scanned into the computer, pictured here:

One advantage to using a computer is the ability to show and hide various layers. In this image, Chris shows us what the poster would look like with no blackline.

This Moonalice matriarch was also used to advertise the first Art of Moonalice Poster Show in Fairfax, CA. While a poster was never printed, handbills do exist.

Another variant of this image made the cover of the Moonalice Legend Book Vol 3, an amazing hardcover book filled with Moonalice Posters, Legends, Photographs and more.

For a limited time while you watch or listen to the show (for FREE) on Moonalice.com, you can also add this poster by Chris Shaw to your collection, but only for a limited time. This poster will not be reprinted again so don’t miss out.

The Making of Moonalice Poster M400 with Chris Shaw

The Making of Moonalice Poster M400 with Chris Shaw

Part of the inspiration for the Chris Shaw poster release stems from his recent art exhibit at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art that featured a series of vividly colored Madonnas. The catalogue can be viewed online at Chris’ website ChrisShawStudio.com.

Moonalice poster M400, designed for the show on August 18, 2011 at Mt. Tabor Theater in Portland is a classic in the series, and a recent trip to Chris’ studio uncovered some process pictures to the making of this poster. One secret about the composition of this piece is it’s use of a double Golden Ratio, pictured below (in red) over the original line drawing.

Once the sketch is completed, it becomes inked, scanned, and given the magical touch by Chris on the computer. By using software programs that include Photoshop, Chris can make color mock ups, like the blue pictured below, to see how things look before anything becomes permanent.

A classic included in the Chris Shaw poster release is number M339 for the show on February 25, 2011 at the Orpheum Theater in Flagstaff, Arizona. This was an exciting time for Moonalice, already renown for offering free live videocasts for almost every performance on moonaliceTV.com, because the band was about to push the envelope even further with live satellite broadcasts using HTML5. This technology allows for anyone with a smart phone or tablet to go the band’s website and follow them while at home on their couch.

The Making of Moonalice Poster M210 By Chris Shaw

In celebration of the Chris Shaw poster release, we are taking a closer look at poster M210 that Chris created for the September 11th, 2009 show at Marin Veteran’s Mermorial Auditorium in San Rafael, California. Moonalice opened for Metallica that night, so Chris wanted to design a poster that both audiences would appreciate. Bring me the head of Medusa!!!

We had the chance to sit down with Chris this week and take a closer look at his process to make this striking poster. Mr. Shaw has shared some pictures with us to show how this piece evolved:

Chris first starts to sketch his idea with pencil, then brings it into Photoshop for some quick mock ups.
After the sketch is complete, Chris creates a blueline, which will then be used for the various layers.
