Paper, Ink and Rock n’ Roll – Episode 1 – The Poster Art of David Singer

The Poster Art of David Singer – Paper, Ink and Rock n’ Roll – Episode 1

This first episode in Paper, Ink and Rock n’ Roll – A History of Rock Posters features an in-depth profile on David Singer.

David Singer is best known as one of the early Fillmore artists, designing 75 posters for Bill Graham, from 1969 to 1990. This was the era before computers changed everything in graphics. Working mostly in the medium of collage, he has now switched from analog cut-and-paste methods to total digital manipulation of images.

Also known for his cryptic hand-lettering, Singer designed the circular Moonalice name that appears on all his posters and is often used as a band logo. David singer currently lives and works in Sonoma, California.

Hurricane Sandy Art Print by Gary Houston

Hurricane Sandy Art Print by Gary Houston

Hurricane Sandy Art Print by Gary Houston, 2013
16.375″ x 20.50″
4 Color Screen Print
Edition of 150
Signed & Numbered

Available directly at Gary’s website: VoodooCatbox.com

Artist Gary Houston, one of many Moonalice Poster artists stranded in New York City from Hurricane Sandy back in October 2012, recently created an art print to commemorate the event with proceeds from the sale going to Hurricane Sandy relief. We recently caught with Gary who explains that:

This print is the result of being in NYC during Hurricane Sandy’s visit to the east coast late October 2012, Thanks to the band Moonalice, who hosted roughly 15 poster artists in the city. As fate would have it, we got to experience this surreal act of nature. My take on this is the hurricane portrayed as Medusa, nonchalantly kicking up wind & waves. After all, nature does not much care if you are in her path. The edition numbers 150, and a good portion will go to Sandy Relief. Sorry, but no wholesale on this one.

While the majority of the Moonalice Poster Series are lithographs, many are screen printed. Gary Houston creates his posters using the Screen Print technique at his studio in Portland, Oregon where each color is applied one at a time, by hand. Gary recently took the time to talk with us about his process to create this striking art print.

About The Process

Sketches to Hurricane Sandy print by Gary Houston

This is completely hands on. It starts with rough sketches, these are then worked out and refined until I’m happy (but in the big picture, are any of us really happy?). I then enlarge the refined drawing to the size it’s going to be. This is tapped down to a light table, and re-drawn once more to re-familiarize myself and do any last minute changes.

With the revised drawing still nailed down to the light table, the colors are figured out. Using Rubylith, a hand cut film, each color separation is cut out using an Xacto knife. Each step is registered to the line art- in this case, it’s the dark brown.

I started the printing with the purple, then the transparent olive green. This overlaps the purple in the water area. Next is the transparent gray, which is the could/wind and overlaps the the snakes. The last color printed is the dark brown, which is the line art and holds the image together.

6/04/12 Moonalice poster by Chris Shaw

A classic featured in the Chris Shaw Poster release is from the June 4, 2012 show at Great American Music Hall in San Francisco for the Project Avary Annual Celebration with Peter Rowan, also known as poster M482 in the Moonalice series.

A recent visit to Chris’ studio uncovered the original art to this masterpiece. Pictured here are the separations to the poster, layed out beside each other for easy comparison.

The original art to poster M482 was created using mixed media including graphite, ink, and wax. Here you can see a close-up of the wax detail applied to one of the blueline layers.

One layer used to this poster that we thought was really cool to see was the highlight blueline layer pictured below.

One of the most popular Moonalice posters from 2012 was M504 in the series, also known as the Jerry Garcia poster. On August 1, 2012 Moonalice played at AT&T Park for Jerry Garcia’s 70th Birthday Celebration, and to mark this special occasion, Art Director Chris Shaw was called upon to design a poster. In celebration of the Chris Shaw Poster release, we take a closer look at this classic.

A recent visit to Chris’s studio revelead a pencil sketch used to create this poster:

Chris also shared the final Jerry Garcia sketch used in the poster pictured here:

Chris teamed up with Chuck Sperry to create a silkscreen version of this poster, the edition size was 100, and have long been sold out. The silkscreen version contains metallic ink, unlike the offset version, and is larger in size measuring 21″ x 31.75″

For the first time ever, Chris shares the progressives to this poster with us. The printing process works with each color being applied one at a time. The silver kicks things off for the silkscreen version, followed by blue, magenta, yellow, and finally black to complete the poster.

When first released online, this poster sold out within hours. For those who missed out, a few copies have turned up in the Moonalice archive and are being offered now for limited time at Moonalice.com. Now’s a great time to add this summer classic to your collection today!
