According to Moonalice legend, today’s poster by Lee Conklin celebrates the first Sunday after Thanksgiving, now known in our tribe as Purple Sunday. A few years ago, members of our tribe innocently left their homes on the day after Thanksgiving, only to get trampled by hordes of crazed holiday shoppers. Two days later, deep purple bruises were in full flower. We dedicate this Psychedelic Sunday to those brave tribe members who carry the scars of past retail experiences. If you’re gonna shop, be prepared to drop!!!

According to Moonalice legend, our artists have created fifteen posters for tonight’s 4/20 show, each describing a different aspect of the Moonalice legend.

This lovely set includes posters by Carolyn Ferris, Darrin Brenner, David Singer, Dennis Loren, Dennis Larkins, Dave Hunter, Lauren Yurkovich, Stanley Mouse, Lee Conklin, Ron Donovan, Wes Wilson, Alexandra Fischer, Wendy Wright, John Mavroudis, and John Seabury. There is also an amazing limited edition silk screen by Gary Houston.

The poster by Wes Wilson depicts Chief Waldo Moonalice of the San Rafael Moonalices. Chief Waldo was a community leader of the finest kind. Waldo’s leadership skills emerged in high school, where each day he led his classmates in a ritual smoke at the statue of Louis Pasteur. Originally known as a 4:20 Louis, that ritual evolved into the high holy day that we celebrate here tonight.

According to Moonalice legend, today’s poster by Lee Conklin features Tsunami Moonalice, the tribe’s patron saint of surfing.  For a one wave tropical depression, Tsunami is remarkably friendly.  He is also wise.  If you look closely at the poster, Tsunami will share a great insight about tonight’s show.  And if you ever go surfing, bring a smoking doobie.  Tsunami really appreciates that.

Artist’s Statement

I am drawn to the idea of including references to the time and place of the concert. The silhouette of Mt. Diablo and the Alamo area suggested lips, which account for the muse’s bemused expression. The moon in her forehead is an approximation of the actual phase of the moon on 6/22/2012 (northern hemisphere). Any resemblance to real people is purely metaphysical.
