Artist Gary Houston, one of many Moonalice Poster artists stranded in New York City from Hurricane Sandy back in October 2012, recently created an art print to commemorate the event with proceeds from the sale going to Hurricane Sandy relief. We recently caught with Gary who explains that:

This print is the result of being in NYC during Hurricane Sandy’s visit to the east coast late October 2012, Thanks to the band Moonalice, who hosted roughly 15 poster artists in the city. As fate would have it, we got to experience this surreal act of nature. My take on this is the hurricane portrayed as Medusa, nonchalantly kicking up wind & waves. After all, nature does not much care if you are in her path. The edition numbers 150, and a good portion will go to Sandy Relief. Sorry, but no wholesale on this one.

While the majority of the Moonalice Poster Series are lithographs, many are screen printed. Gary Houston creates his posters using the Screen Print technique at his studio in Portland, Oregon where each color is applied one at a time, by hand. Gary recently took the time to talk with us about his process to create this striking art print.

About The Process

This is completely hands on. It starts with rough sketches, these are then worked out and refined until I’m happy (but in the big picture, are any of us really happy?). I then enlarge the refined drawing to the size it’s going to be. This is tapped down to a light table, and re-drawn once more to re-familiarize myself and do any last minute changes.

With the revised drawing still nailed down to the light table, the colors are figured out. Using Rubylith, a hand cut film, each color separation is cut out using an Xacto knife. Each step is registered to the line art- in this case, it’s the dark brown.

I started the printing with the purple, then the transparent olive green. This overlaps the purple in the water area. Next is the transparent gray, which is the could/wind and overlaps the the snakes. The last color printed is the dark brown, which is the line art and holds the image together.
