The Art of Moonalice

An exhibit of Rock Posters created for the band Moonalice.

Moonalice is a band that commissions a poster for every gig and gives them away for free.  Since the band’s formation in 2007, Moonalice has produced a unique series of almost 550 original gig posters with artwork from over 20 artists.

Moonalice posters feature artwork from many of the legendary poster artists of the psychedelic 60’s as well as today’s top rock poster artists.  Moonalice is a band that lets poster artists do what they do best – make art! Unencumbered by standard constraints, Moonalice posters are as diverse as the artists who create them.

On Sunday, October 28, 2012,  Moonalice proudly presents their 2nd poster show at the Brooklyn Bowl.  The full series of Moonalice posters will be on display and available for purchase at this FREE East Coast event.  Many Moonalice poster artists will be attending the event in-person. The poster show opens at noon, Moonalice’s concert will follow the poster show in the evening. Join the event on Facebook!

Before The Art of Moonalice kicks off at the Brooklyn Bowl on October 28th, many Moonalice artists will be making a special appearance at The Rock Poster Society’s annual Fall Classic the Festival of Rock Posters, held at the San Francisco County Fair Building (formerly known as the Hall of Flowers) in beautiful Golden Gate Park on Saturday October 13, 2012.

This event will feature poster artists and dealers from around the country, and is the biggest rock poster event of its kind anywhere! Attendees will find everything from vintage psychedelic treasures to modern silkscreen rock posters, and of course Moonalice posters!

The Fes­ti­val of Rock Posters runs from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm. Admis­sion is $10 for the pub­lic, and $5 for TRPS mem­bers with card. You can join online at TRPS.org or renew at the event to take advan­tage of the mem­ber discount.

Don’t forget to bring your Moonalice posters with you, this is a great opportunity to get them signed by the artist!

According to Moonalice legend, tonight’s poster by Dave Hunter is the subject of controversy.  One theory is that it depicts the Cubensis star. Long considered to be a celestial force beyond description, the star casts a hypnotic spell on members of our tribe.  Its energy pulses cause involuntary smiling, twirling, and veggie burritos.  Once a member of the Moonalice tribe experiences the deep vibes of the Cubensis star, they always come back for more!!!!

Tomorrow night, I will share a different view of Dave’s poster.

According to Moonalice legend, the controversy about tonight’s poster by Dave Hunter began in 1906 when William Jennings Bryan suffered an unexpected bout of flatulence upon hearing reports of the San Francisco earth quake. It got worse when one of Dave’s drafts went down on the Titanic. Forgotten during the World Wars, the controversy re-emerged during the Red Scare of the 50’s. By the time it got to Jerry Garcia in 1967, the controversy was ready for anything. It went to an Acid Test and has never been the same.
