Bread & Roses presents Hope & Healing Through Live Music

Bread & Roses is a philanthropic organization that produces more than 600 concerts a year for people who can’t get out: people in prison, hospitals, nursings homes and the like. They produce our shows at Delancey Street, veterans hospitals and similar venues. B&R gave us an award this year for posters that our artists have created for their events. We love Bread & Roses and hope you will join us in supporting their mission.

About This Show

The Rex Musical Caravan recreated the memorable Aug 13, 1975 “Make Believe Ballroom” show at the Great American Music Hall. 

One From the Vault is a live album by the Grateful Dead, recorded on August 13, 1975 at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, California, and released April 15, 1991 on Grateful Dead Records, the personal record label of the band. The concert was broadcast on FM radio, widely traded by fans on cassettes, and sold in bootleg LP versions under the titles Urubouros Deedni Mublasaron and Make Believe Ballroom. But it was not until the Grateful Dead released it on their eponymous record label, Grateful Dead Records, that high quality versions of the songs appeared. It was the first complete concert recording released commercially by the band. The concert also marked the first time that the then recently released album Blues for Allah was performed live in its entirety, albeit with a few other songs thrown in.

The sound man for this event also worked the original show in 1975. He has been at GAMH the entire time.

According to Moonalice legend, Boulder was once the western edge of the American prairie. Being both Western and edgy put Boulder at the leading in the years before the white man came. In those days, cannabis grew wild around here … the prairie was a sea of weed. Indicas. Sativas. Gold. Purple. The buds were so big and tasty that weed formed the foundation of an entire ecosystem. Like now, but with no cities … or buildings. As you can see in tonight’s poster by Alexandra Fischer, the bison that roamed these parts took on the hue of their favorite strain. Now that weed is legal, rainbow bison will thrive again!!!

According to Moonalice legend, this an extra special Oregon Country Fair. As of July 1, our tribe’s favorite crop is legal in Oregon. We view this as a small, but important triumph for the hippie values we share. Peace, love, and nature guide us here every year. As depicted in Alexandra Fischer’s poster, the fair is a mighty tree named Kesey Moonalice, growing taller and stronger every year, protecting everyone here from the elements, filling us all with love. Kesey the Tree also offers great music food and crafts. And now weed is legal! What more could we ask?

Legend

According to Moonalice legend, wine plays an important role in the Moonalice legend. Despite our best efforts to the contrary, there is more to the legend than weed. Whites, for example. And wine. Which brings us to the DeLorimier Winery this evening. We are here in search of Cabernet Moonalice, the tribe’s patron saint of red wine. As depicted in tonight’s poster by Alexandra Fischer, Cabernet is an oenological marvel: her hair is a vineyard full of ripe grapes. Originally a Sauvignon blonde, Merlot has been dying her hair for many years. Now we are dying to meet her.
