The Moonalice Legend Posters and Words Book Series Fine Leather Bindings by Patricia & George Sargent

When artists Patricia & George Sargent aren’t designing posters, currently with 11 pieces in the Moonalice series, they can be found at Dragonfly Bindery Studio in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, where they have been working for over 30 years on Antiquarian Book and Paper Restoration, Dust Jacket Restoration, Fine Leather Bindings, Archival Storage and more.

Poster aficionados will be delighted to learn this team has experience with tape stain removal, paper repairs, color touch up, reconstruction of missing areas and imagery for your most cherished, but weathered pieces in the collection.

We recently caught up with The Sargents to talk about their work commissioned by Roger McNamee (Moonalice | Doobie Decibel System) to create fine leather bindings for The Moonalice Legend Posters and Words book series, currently at six volumes.

Book bound in full yellow Harmatan goatskin. Inset onlaid leather images with design elements from Chris Shaw (woman & toad) and David Singer (logo), onlays of goatskin using a variety of colors. Face and neck area raised and sculpted, brass wire necklace chain and opal drop. Smoke extending from toad’s joint to front logo using gold and blind tooling. Edges and inside edges decorative gold tooled. The spine has raised bands, leather labels, gold lines single and decorative. Olive green endpapers with moon phases printed along top.

Housed in a clamshell box, with 1/4 Harmatan black goatskin rounded spine, raised bands, gold decorative full panels, leather spine labels, black linen cloth, lined with patterned velvet.

The frog came from poster M48 ( 2/29/08 ) and the woman from poster M111 ( 9/12/08 ).

The background and front image is from a poster designed by Stanley Mouse for Roger and Ann’s anniversary. Roger is zoned out playing his guitar sending kisses (designed by David Singer) to Ann, while Chris Shaw‘s Big lipped fish is sucking them in. Also David Singer (logo) on Rogers back.

Bound in full tan goat skin, with onlays snake and goat skin. Includes art from Moonalice posters M81 ( 6/7/08 ) Roger & Ann celebrating 25 years, fish from M149 ( 3/25/09 ) & lips from M47 ( 2/16/08 )

Bound 2016 in full cream colored alum goatskin leather (from Steve Siegel Leather). Four raised bands on book spine, with dark green goatskin leather labels, center stamps stamped on dark green goatskin and gilt and blind lines across the spine. Front and back covers hot stamped in black foil based on the 26th stanza text and illustration. The front and back covers are hand colored with acrylic paint, with 34 Ethiopian opals mounted in 14k yellow gold bezels. Housed in a dark green silk cloth box with dark green goatskin rounded leather spine. The spine has four raised bands with red labels and floral designs stamped on red goatskin with gilt and blind lines across the spine and sides of the box. The box is lined with dark green velvet.

The Grateful Dead celebrate their 50th anniversary this year, 2016. Design capitalizes on the use of the image in the Grateful Dead icon which has attained legendary contemporary status. Avalon Ballroom poster #FD26 was designed by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelly. This is the first edition of the Rubáiyát Of Omar Khayyám that this famous image appears.
