Vortex Music Magazine interviews artist Gary Houston
Gary Houston has been screen printing posters by hand in Portland, Oregon for over 25 years, so we’re really excited to learn Vortex Music Magazine recently interviewed this amazing artist and human being. For those unfamiliar, Gary’s scratchboard style has provided the visual aethetic to many concert posters, including ten in Moonalice Poster Series.

Talk, Play, and Sip: The Art and Allure of the Record Album with Boing Boing and Noise Pop

Friday, July 18, 2014, 7–8:30 pm

Artist Winston Smith, who has designed many Moonalice posters will be on a panel discussing the art and allure of vinyl records at the Oakland Museum of California on July 18.

Decades after records were declared dead media by the mainstream, the vinyl revival has broken through to popular consciousness. But for many musicians, visual artists, designers, and fans, vinyl’s visceral power has never disappeared. In this energetic panel discussion, presented in collaboration with Boing Boing and Noise Pop, Boing Boing editor David Pescovitz and a panel of legends from the worlds of art, design, and music will discuss why we still yearn to put the needle on the record.

Guests include:
Nick Harmer, bassist, Death Cab for Cutie
Winston Smith, legendary punk artist for Dead Kennedys, Green Day, and Alternative Tentacles
Lawrence Azerrad, designer of iconic albums by Wilco, Miles Davis, and the Beach Boys

Enjoy mixed drinks and other beverages during the night at a special bar located in the Vinyl exhibition during Friday Nights @ OMCA. Beverages will be for sale in the gallery from 5 to 9 pm.

Talk and Play, a program series in Vinyl: The Sound and Culture of Records, features guest participants from DJs to music journalists, record collectors to experimental musicians. Talk, Play, and Sip stirs up the social atmosphere with a bar located in the Gallery during select Friday Nights @ OMCA. With something different every week, you might find yourself swapping albums with collectors, learning from an expert about the mechanics of pressing an album, or listening to a specially curated music set.

Included with Museum admission. During Friday Nights @ OMCA, from 5 to 9 pm, admission is half-price for adults, free for ages 18 and under. Admission for Members is always free. Seating for this event is limited, and available on a first-come, first-served basis.

75th Anniversary of the National Baseball Hall of Fame Concert Event poster by Dennis Larkins

Moonalice Summer Tour kicks off tomorrow and poster fans can expect new amazing and unique art at each gig! On August 2nd, the tour stops in Cooperstown, New York for an extra special event, the 75th Anniversary of the Baseball Hall Of Fame Concert. No Moonalice appearance would be complete without a poster, and renowned artist Dennis Larkins designed a classic (pictured above) to mark this very special occasion. The live concert event will feature some of the music industry’s top recording artists including Moonalice, as well as celebrities from the world of film and television. The concert will take place in Cooperstown, New York at the Clark Sports Center, site of the annual Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony.

Memories & Dreams Magazine (volume 36 number 3)

The latest issue of Memories & Dreams Magazine (volume 36 number 3), the official magazine of the Hall of Fame, features a great article about the poster and provides some back story to this piece. Moonalice Art Director Chris Shaw approached Dennis with the offer to design the poster, and also art directed the project.

Opening: Thursday, May 1, 2014 – 6 pm to 10 pm

Chuck Sperry will be making a special month long installation in San Francisco of his very newest, large-scale, screen printed wood panel works of art – as a preview for his American supporters – of the show he is making in Paris at Galerie Oberkampf. The setting for the show is Sperry’s original Firehouse studio located on Pacific Avenue between Polk Street and Van Ness in San Francisco. There will be food, beverages and music; rock posters to be acquired; and Sperry’s newest screen printed works on wood panel. This will definitely be a fun evening!

Opening: Thursday, May 1, 2014, Firehouse 8 of San Francisco will debut a special month long solo exposition of Chuck Sperry’s very newest large-scale works of art. The opening night reception and party that is free and open to the public. The show will be on view to the general public until May 31.
