According to Moonalice legend, this is Moonalice’s first visit to Buffalo … and we’re really digging it. Especially the food. Tonight’s poster by John Seabury depicts Wings Moonalice, the tribe’s patron saint of smoked meats and barbecue sauce. She used to be in charge of jerky, but dropped it after a bout of indigestion that left her delirious. Wings is big on body art, and has covered her face with tattoo bullet holes to protest gun violence. She also smokes a ton of weed because it is the best way to get high. We need more of that kind of leadership in Washington.

TRPS Festival of Rock Posters 2019

The Rock Poster Society presents it’s annual event Festival of Rock Posters on Saturday, October 19, 2019 at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Held at the San Francisco County Fair Building (also known as the Hall of Flowers), it’s the biggest rock poster event of its kind! This is the perfect opportunity to meet many talented artists and add some new art to your collection.

This one day event runs from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm with admission varying depending on the time you arrive, after 3:00 pm the event is FREE. A complete list of all artists and vendors attending is at TRPS.org.

According to Moonalice legend, it has been far too long since our last visit to the Philadelphia area. We were suffering from hoagie withdrawal.

Tonight’s poster by John Seabury depicts Hoagie Moonalice, who is the finest grower in Delaware County. His buds are few in number — there are only two, as Hoagie points out — but powerful in buzz. You can get a contact high at 420 paces. Hoagie wants you to know that cannabis prohibition is a bad idea. Eventually it will go away. And one day the Phillies will win the World Series. When that happens, happiness will return to the Delaware Valley.

The back story to the Illustration:

It’s based on a very old sketch. Way back in 1978, I was in the studio with the Psycotic Pineapple. Our producer was Dan Alexander, who had recently started collecting original drawings of Pyno Man. I’m not sure if I recall correctly, but I think I was trying get some weed off of him. He said I could draw something for him in trade. He handed me a piece of paper and two pens. So I gripped both pens together and drew a double cartoon face. Then I drew his hand holding up two fingers. Except he had one too many fingers. I captioned it “How many fingers am I holding up?”

Artist John Seabury, currently with 37 posters in the Moonalice Series, will be teaching the art class Drawing Upon Imagination focusing on Cross Hatching, Scratchboard, Stippling, and several other drawing techniques with an emphasis on creativity and originality.

Classes will be held on Tuesdays from 4 pm to 6 pm at Carolyn Ferris Art Studio in Fairfax, California. This eight-week course is open to all levels of experience ages 14 to Adult.

Syllabus

  • Week 1: Getting acquainted, discuss each student’s main focus for artwork. We will also try out a drawing technique.
  • Week 2: Pencil. Complete one basic sketch in pencil from scratch. It can be any image but must serve as the basis for a later, more finished work. Focus on composition.
  • Week 3: Inking or otherwise finishing the sketch. If you bring a lightbox, you can trace your image on fresh paper, but it is not required.
  • Week 4: Shading. Different shading techniques to help choose which techniques you wish to practice.
  • Week 5: Self-teaching, or, learn from the masters. Pick a favorite artist whose drawings you admire. Try to imitate their techniques through observation. This will help understand strong points and limitations to further develop an individule style.
  • Week 6: Bring toned and/or black paper and light colored gel pens and/or pencils, pastel or chalk. We will examine the differences between drawing with light rather than shadow. No white paper will be used today.
  • Week 7: Where do you get your ideas? We’ll talk about coming up with concepts, experimentation, and what to do when not feeling inspired. Scratchboard techniques.
  • Week 8: Freehand ink. Drawing without a net. We will also review and discuss the experiences of the previous weeks.
