Artist’s Statement

“Faced with the challenge of visually capturing and combining the whimsy and mystique of Moonalice, with the psychedelic vibes referencing the Dead.

Starting with the classic White Rabbit, I felt in this case he should be musically inclined…as well as lunar-ly located. I kept him chronologically challenged, though the cause could be the strange lunar fungi following him. After that, well…the bus came by and he got on of course. Imagine his surprise when it was Cowboy Alice at the wheel, and the bus lead down the rabbit hole to mystical, magical Long Beach.”

Legend

According to Moonalice legend, tonight’s poster by Darrin Brenner recalls a day when the Furthur bus came by. Surprisingly, Cowboy Neil was not at the wheel – some suggest that perhaps he had overindulged – so Alice took over. Being only ten, Alice did not know how to drive, so the old International Harvester drove itself while Alice leaned out the windshield throwing flowers and mushrooms to passers by. Meanwhile, the March Hare was playing moon golf with a guitar while he waited for the bus, which was – surprise, surprise – a bit on the late side. The Hare was desperate to get to a gig; tension was mounting. The Hare was out of pills to make him small, so going down the rabbit hole wasn’t an option. His only option was a tie dyed school bus driven by a child. Let that be a lesson to us . . .

Legend

According to Moonalice legend, tonight’s poster by Darrin Brenner features a character from tribal mythology, Donna Quixote Moonalice. An avid equestrian, Donna Quixote Moonalice liked to breeze through town on her white horse, Mescalito. One night, a really big dragon came by Donna’s place, saw Mescalito grazing in a pasture, and enjoyed a tasty dinner of barbecued Mescalito. Donna was so pissed off she smacked the dragon upside the head, jumped on its back and rode off into outer space. She was never heard from again!

Legend

According to Moonalice legend, today’s poster by Darrin Brenner has been enlarged a bazillion times. It features the mysterious Higgs Boson Moonalice, a very, very small member of our tribe whose mere existence remained a matter of dispute until this week. As you can see from the poster, Higgs Boson Moonalice not only exists, but she can execute a basketball finger roll worthy of Michael Jordan, so long as the basketball in question is a subatomic particle. Some have theorized that Higgs is the glue that holds together the tribe. Or possibly, that she is really the building block of nothingness. From our perspective, it’s okay either way. Higgs Boson Moonalice is here to stay!!!

The Art of Moonalice Poster Show – Slim’s – April 20, 2012

A Special Art Exhibit with 16 Moonalice Posters Artists in Attendance!

Moonalice is a band that commissions a poster for every gig and gives them away for free. Since the band’s formation in 2007, Moonalice has produced a unique series of over 460 original gig posters with artwork from over 20 artists.

Moonalice posters feature artwork from many of the legendary poster artists of the psychedelic 60’s as well as today’s top rock poster artists. Moonalice is a band that lets poster artists do what they do best – make art! Unencumbered by standard constraints, Moonalice posters are as diverse as the artists who create them.

Moonalice proudly presents the third Art of Moonalice poster exhibit at the Tribal Pow-Wow at Slim’s. We are going to show as many Moonalice posters as space permits. Sixteen Moonalice poster artists will be in attendance too! Moonalice’s concert will follow the poster show at 7:20pm, admission at the door is $4.20.

Doors open at 6:00pm!

Legend

According to Moonalice legend, we have a dozen posters tonight . . . all legendary . . . by Stanley Mouse, Carolyn Ferris, Wendy Wright, Gary Houston, David Singer, John Seabury, John Mavroudis, Dennis Loren, Dennis Larkins, Lee Conklin and Darrin Brenner. We also want to thank the other poster artists who are with us tonight: Wes Wilson, Chuck Sperry, Lauren Yurkovich, Dave Hunter, Alexandra Fischer, Marguerite Kelley (widow of Alton Kelley), and our incredible art director, Chris Shaw. Time will not permit me to share the legends from all the posters.

Time will not permit me to share the legends from all the posters, but with a three set show, I can go further than normal.

According to Moonalice legend, this poster by Carolyn Ferris, depicts a very talented bloke from Bromley, England – the man formerly known as Sir Sinjin Moonalice – testing the full pharmacopia of the Moonalice tribe. Given the quality and quantity of Moonalice natural remedies, this was a job requiring tremendous self-sacrifice. Pete’s commitment to the betterment of the tribe serves as a model for us all. Happy 4/20!!!

According to Moonalice legend, this poster by Stanley Mouse depicts the day – early in the life of this band – when we stopped for burritos in a shop in Willits, CA on our way to a gig in Laytonville. One of our former bandmates and I added Cholula hot sauce to our burritos from a communal bottle that was on the condiment rack behind the shop. Long story short, somebody dosed us. This picture doesn’t look like anyone I saw that day . . . so the image must be of me. I hope I didn’t strangle the cat.

According to Moonalice legend, this poster by Dennis Larkins depicts the day that Pokey Moonalice, the tribal basset hound, first came to San Francisco. Pokey didn’t have a car or opposable thumbs, so he jumped in the back seat of a convertible somewhere near Portland and hitched a ride with two white people who had no idea what they were in for. Sadly, Pokey didn’t keep a diary, so we have no idea either. Oh well. That’s why they call it 4/20!!!
