According to Moonalice legend, today’s poster by Chris Shaw depicts Jerry Garcia’s curve ball. Legend has it that Jerry’s curveball flew. Unfortunately, it only flew after it made contact with a bat, after which it generally flew over the fence. This is why Jerry became a guitar player and the Grateful Dead became famous.

Legend

According to Moonalice legend, today’s poster by Chris Shaw depicts Ninilchik Moonalice, a salmon who has come to symbolize this festival. Ninilchik is mounted on a nice slab of polished walnut. If you offer him a doobie, he may accept. If he doesn’t, Ninilchik will bellow “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” at the top of his gills. So keep your doobies handy!!!

Legend

According to Moonalice legend, tonight’s poster by our art director, Chris Shaw depicts King Henry the Ape Moonalice. The ape Moonalices came in two flavors – Tudor and Four Door – and but they all believed in serial marriages. Henry liked variety, so his spouses included a Spanish princess, a Scottish terrier and a side of beef. For reasons as sensible as the Zimmerman verdict, custody of the kids went to the side of beef.

On July 20, 2013, The Rock Poster Society is hosting Rock Art By The Bay at Mission Masonic Center in San Francisco. Admission is FREE to this one day event, and will run from 10:00am to 6:00pm. If you are in the Bay Area, this is a great opportunity to meet many poster artists, and get some of your Moonalice posters signed too! Moonalice artist Alexandra Fischer designed a cool event poster (pictured above) that will be available at the show.

A classic featured in the Chris Shaw Poster release is from the June 4, 2012 show at Great American Music Hall in San Francisco for the Project Avary Annual Celebration with Peter Rowan, also known as poster M482 in the Moonalice series.

A recent visit to Chris’ studio uncovered the original art to this masterpiece. Pictured here are the separations to the poster, layed out beside each other for easy comparison.

The original art to poster M482 was created using mixed media including graphite, ink, and wax. Here you can see a close-up of the wax detail applied to one of the blueline layers.
