Moonalice is not playing, but will be hosting a special live stream of the 16th annual Jerry Day event on Moonalice.com and Nugs.tv.

Jerry Day is a civic and cultural event that celebrates one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time and San Francisco native son – Jerry Garcia. This event captures the true spirit of Jerry Garcia as we celebrate his legacy, the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater, and recognize his childhood roots from the Excelsior District of San Francisco. By uniting the diverse communities of San Francisco through Jerry’s music, we are creating something extraordinary for Jerry’s childhood neighborhood – the Excelsior District, McLaren Park, and the City and County of San Francisco.

This event runs from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Melvin Seals and JGB – 12:45pm
Stu Allen & Mars Hotel – 3:00pm

Performers

Stu Allen & Mars HotelStu Allen & Mars Hotel, a tribute band based out of the San Francisco Bay Area, emulates the feel, excitement, and energy of the Grateful Dead at their peak. Filled with jam band veterans and Grateful Dead enthusiasts, this band is sure to please even the most discriminating dead-head. Featuring the ever-popular and always inventive Stu Allen (formerly of Melvin Seals & JGB), Mars Hotel presents familiar and obscure Dead songs which they use as launch pads for flights of improvisation. Come join Stu Allen & Mars Hotel for a far out journey that’s sure to hit home.

Melvin Seals and JGBMelvin Seals and JGB bring an intuitive, expressive style, soul, spontaneity and remarkable chops to the table. With acoustic and electric ingredients and unique combinations of Zach Nugent’s guitar and vocals, John Paul McLean’s savory bass, Pete Lavezzoli’s hearty drums and, of course, a heapin’ helpin’ of the wizard’s magic on Hammond B-3 Organ and keyboards. Along with Sunshine Becker and Lady Chi on back-up vocals, the result is a most satisfying blend of natural organic grooves that challenges genre boundaries. Their chemistry is the focus from which they create a spontaneous and high art where the sky is the limit musically. They offer an exciting, often psychedelic musical journey that changes nightly and keeps the audience dancing and smiling (and some staring in amazement) for hours.

Adding his rock-gospel-soul-rhythm and blues touch with his funky style of playing, no wonder Jerry nicknamed him “Master of the Universe”. Melvin continues to treat music lovers to his unique brand of melodic flavor with JGB. Come see and hear for yourself!

MELVIN SEALS & JGB:
Melvin Seals – Hammond B3 Organ, Keyboards & Vocals
Zach Nugent – Electric Guitar & Lead Vocals
John Paul McLean – Bass
Pete Lavezzoli – Drums
Sunshine Becker & Lady Chi – Backup Vocals

Gary Gates BandGary Gates Band
After more than four decades of rocking the Bay Area, including performances at Phil Lesh’s Terrapin Crossroads, Gary Gates has earned his status as a respected elder of the Bay Area jam band scene. Gary’s tried and true brand of reggae-tinged psychedelic jam rock has been getting people on their feet ever since the late 70s when Gary toured as the opening act for Neil Young. Upliifting lyrics, danceable grooves and epic guitar solos are Gary’s forte, including a large catalog of memorable originals mixed with his versions of Bob Marley, Grateful Dead, etc. Gary typically gives away his CDs for free at his shows including the acoustic big band of “Live at the San Gregorio General Store,” recorded and produced by John Nowland, best known as Neil Young’s studio engineer. Gary’s latest release includes three tracks recorded with Phil Lesh at Terrapin Crossroads. For the last 20 something years, Gary has been the closing act at both the La Honda Fair and the Pescadero Art & Fun Festival, securing his place as a musical fixture on the coast.

If you are looking for an alternative to behavior modification empires like Facebook, whose main source of revenue is selling your data, you can now follow Moonalice Posters at The Grateful Dead Wheel. The Wheel’s mission is more aligned with the Deadhead community where people are not products.

The Grateful Dead Wheel is headed by Grateful Dead Family Album author Jerilyn Brandelius, a long time Grateful Dead Family Member.

The Wheel is intended to be a central cyber-gathering place for Deadheads and all things related to the Grateful Dead. We have created The Wheel, using the Grateful Dead Family Album Book in the center as a catalyst. The Hub is permanent content: photography, news, Family stories, event listings and everything of interest to the Dead community. The Spokes are websites that relate in some way to the Band and the Family. We encourage everyone to send us links to your business and creative endeavors to add to the Spokes.

This social network and Community Newsfeed is a place to communicate with each other and continue to build our history by adding stories and photos to our personal pages.

We are creating something Built To Last and I will be adding to this site for the rest of my natural life! As I hope will all of you. – Jerilyn Brandelius

Why the Wheel

The Grateful Dead community has always had a place in my heart. Sure the music is great, but what I have enjoyed most out of all the years following the Dead is the community, the friends I have made over the years, and the feeling of belonging to something much bigger than just following a band. Some of the connections for me started when I joined the Well. The Well has a large Grateful Dead community. It was a place where you could share your thoughts on the music and also band together for causes like the Minglewood Town Council (our attempt at saving the Kaiser Auditorium for shows). So that is why I am excited about The Wheel! I see it as a centralized location for all things Grateful Dead, a place you can find out about upcoming shows, a place to find historical treasures posted by the family members, and most importantly, the community that will evolve here.

You may ask why not just use Facebook? Facebook is great for connecting with old friends but information on the band is spread out all over Facebook. You need to either join groups related to the band or follow the various family members. Also, it is really easy to miss items in the news feed as there is no ordering to the posts and there is a lot of other stuff that gets thrown in that you don’t care about (i.e. most of my news feed these days is political). The Wheel not only is a social network but as mentioned before will provide a central location for all things Grateful Dead, something that is long overdue!
