Artist’s Statement

“I had lots of fun making this one, because the central image is an old picture from 1879 of Emperor Norton. If you don’t happen to know who he is, Norton was one of those eccentric historical San Francisco characters. I’ve always wanted to put him in a poster. He was born in England and his family later moved to South Africa. Eventually he inherited some money from his father and he moved to San Francisco.

He did quite well in real estate, but when China stopped importing rice (because of a famine there), he made a deal to import rice from South America and ultimately went bankrupt because of this venture. The price of rice was high, when he began, but others soon also began importing rice from other countries and the cost fell to 3 cents a pound. Needless to say he lost his shirt and this was probably the reason why he went crazy.

He left SF for a short time, but soon returned and declared himself Norton the First, Emperor of the United States and Protector of Mexico. He even printed his own money that some local shops in SF recognized as legal tender – ha!!!

Later both writers Mark Twain and Robert Louis Stephenson (who were journalist in SF at the time), would use Norton as a character their books. He was supposedly one of those lovable kooks that local SF people tolerated. Like my Union Square/Alma Spreckles/Moonalice poster (from a couple of years ago), here is another one with a local SF historical theme that I think Roger will appreciate.”
