Moonalice poster by Lee Conklin
Legend
According to Moonalice legend, tonight’s poster by Lee Conklin depicts the Stone Church … as viewed by William Bradford Small, the only member of Congress to hail from here in Newmarket. Very little is known about Small, who represented New Hampshire for only one term, from 1873 to 1875. How did he get elected? Why couldn’t he get re-elected? History says little, so we consulted the Moonalice legend … which suggests that Small may have been a pseudonym for a major hemp farmer: Jonathan Shitt, known to his customers as Jack. Small’s product made great rope and paper, of course, but that didn’t get him elected. Nope. He got elected by inventing a strain — OF Kush (for Original Founder Kush) and then promising a quarter pound to every voter. Unfortunately for Small, he ran out of weed and could not follow through on his campaign promise. he lost his first re-election campaign to a guy who promised to invent electricity.
