According to Moonalice legend, tonight’s poster by Dennis Loren celebrates tribal inventor Charles Crawford Moonalice. Born right here in Long Beach, Charles devoted his life to creating a hemp-powered one man band! Today is the centennial Charles’ near miss … the day he got closest. The bands of his era were huge, so Charles often integrated 50 or 100 instruments in a one man band. Then came the hard part: playing. What with the organ and all the horns, Charles need lots of wind. Beans did the trick.

  2. This poster was a lot of fun for me to design. Last August – when I was back in Detroit for my high school reunion – I found the two old photographs of Charles Crawford “The One man Band.” He was a real person who built a contraprion that allowed him to play a violin, trumpet, piano and chello all at the same time. He worked in Detroit area in the 1890s, 1900s and on into 1920s. This was during the “Industrial Revolution,” when Detroit was a mecca for inventors of all kinds. The picture of the little boy playing the drum is me. It was taken by my late father in 1948, when I was around 2 years old. I thought the poster design needed one more element to give it balance and a little percussion – ha!!! – Dennis Loren
