Artists Chuck Sperry, Wes Wilson, and Stanley Mouse, all with posters in the Moonalice series, have art in the upcoming exhibition Litmus Test: Works on Paper from the Psychedelic Era curated by independent curator and critic Carlo McCormick and FWMoA Curator of Contemporary Art Josef Zimmerman.

The Psychedelic Era was, among many things, a cultural frontier for colors and imagery. Music, politics, and drugs ignited an unprecedented expansion of art revolving around these elements. College campuses around the country, now seen as the birthing grounds for much of the psychedelic era’s ideals, were hotbeds for bright young minds to organize politically and artistically. From Berkeley College to the Grande Ballroom in Detroit, young idealists organized and the art of the era came to fruition. This exhibition will be our bridge to that time, showcasing a variety of psychedelic era works on paper.

Highlighting this experience is the Grande Ballroom in Detroit, Michigan. The poster work and ephemera of Gary Grimshaw and the photography of Leni Sinclair will showcase the art that poured out of that time and place. Blotter sheets from Mark Mothersbaugh, H.R. Giger, S. Clay Wilson, Chuck Sperry, and more will represent the creative fuel for many of the artists of the time. Also featured will be the work of the poster artists of the time: Wes Wilson, Victor Moscoso, Stanely Mouse, Rick Griffin, and Alton Kelley. Lastly works by artists Alex and Allyson Grey and Isaac Abrams will display the fine art guided and influenced by the era and movement.

TRPS presents Festival of Rock Posters 2017 event poster by Shane Edward Grogg

On Saturday, October 28, 2017, The Rock Poster Society is hosting their annual fall event Festival of Rock Posters at the San Francisco County Fair Building (also known as the Hall of Flowers) in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. This event runs from 10:00am to 6:00pm and admission will vary depending on the time you arrive, after 3:00pm the event is FREE. Join the event on Facebook for more information.

If you are in the Bay Area, this is a great opportunity to meet many Moonalice and Doobie Decibel System poster artists, and get some of your favorites signed too! Artist Shane Grogg designed a psychedelic poster (pictured above) which will be available to purchase at the show.

Wes Wilson, who is generally acknowledged as the father of the ’60s rock concert poster, with 25 in the Moonalice series, has teamed up with Carolyn Ferris, with 52 in the series, to create this psychedelic poster for the 50th Anniversary of the Summer of Love.

We had a chance to catch up with Wes who shared some insight about this surreal beauty named “Dick and Jane.”

Our first artwork for the Summer of Love 23 and Me celebration poster included a dancing figure and her partner. However, the 23 and me representative objected to our artwork because “people are in it” and the woman’s dress was too sensual. At first, she suggested perhaps it might work if we took the man out and leaving the woman with less thigh showing.

We looked at the option of taking the man out, it didn’t carry the feeling of the Summer of Love without a man and a woman – it seemed less pertinent. We felt that figures and people were a major part of the Summer of Love. We still feel that way. We enjoyed working with the quite young 23 and Me representative except we had a slightly different perspective to the meaning of Summer of Love, but it was their party. After our amazement at such a perspective subsided, we then decided to make adjustments to satisfy our initially dismayed client in an acceptable manner as best we could.

After working on the couple we’d created for a couple weeks, we created an alternative poster with only wings and a heart over the San Francisco skyline which was more acceptable to them, all in a three-day turnaround. The first Summer of Love poster remains unpublished.

We thought it would be of interest to share this story with our fellow artists and rock poster aficionados. We decided to print a final Summer of Love poster with the couple we call Dick and Jane for our third Summer of Love poster to be self-published in order not to miss out on our original inspiration for the poster. Two of the three posters will be available at our TRPS booth, our other Moonalice posters will also be available with us at our booth or possibly with Chris Shaw and Alex Fischer’s Moonalice booth.
