LYRICS

Verse 1:
Dr. King received a message As he sat there in his cell
In Birmingham Alabama He had gone there to repel
The troubles in that city For which it was well known
Though his message spoke of peace Into the prison he was thrown
Pastors sent that message Urging King to wait
They didn’t want his protest He wasn’t welcome in their state

CHORUS:
History has taught us The Reverend understood
The bad get their power From the silence of the good

Verse 2:
King replied with a letter About our country’s sins
“An unjust law’s no law at all” Said St. Augustine
The year was 1963 It was time to decide
All people should be freed “Justice delayed is justice denied”

CHORUS:
History has taught us The Reverend understood
The bad get their power From the silence of the good

Verse 3:
Has anything been changing In the decades that have passed?
After Floyd and many others Might the country finally grasp?
It’s more than just a slogan It’s a way to live our lives
When Martin’s dream is realized Only then will justice arrive

CHORUS:
As history has taught us The Reverend understood
The bad get their power From the silence
From the silence… …of the good

Printmaking with Gary Houston of Voodoo Catbox

Printmaking with Gary Houston of Voodoo Catbox

Portland-based artist Gary Houston, currently with 30 posters in the Moonalice series, has created a wonderful video series on the printmaking process.

Some of Gary’s posters (pictured below) have been screenprinted by Gary, and this four part series covers the process that brings these beautiful posters to life, each one individually signed and numbered.

The series begins with the initial concept sketch and transforming that drawing into a scratchboard illustration. Part two digs into color separations, while the third segment teaches about preparing the screens, before the final part of printing.

Moonalice & Jack Markell – “Charlottesville” (Official Music Video)

Moonalice & Jack Markell – “Charlottesville” (Official Music Video)

August 12, 2020 By Moonalice Posters Leave a Comment

Former Governor of Delaware Jack Markell was outraged by Donald Trump’s claim that “there were very fine people on both sides” of the Charlottesville protest. Heather Heyer, who was killed at that protest, had a favorite line, “If you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention.” That line and Heather’s commitment to justice motivated Markell to write these lyrics. Featuring Members of the Moonalice Family, the T Sisters, Dylan and Lester Chambers, Jason Crosby, Ann and Roger McNamee, and Estelle and Dan Lebowitz, the song commemorates the third anniversary of this tragedy.

Lyrics

Verse 1:
“If you’re not outraged you’re not paying attention”
Heather Heyer wrote with pure intention
Friday night, she sat in her room
With her TV spewing out Nazi salutes
Fear washed over her; she was consumed
Her heart led her to Charlottesville

And when she woke up that Saturday morn
The news feed made her feel so torn
Though she had not planned to attend
She was so alarmed by that darkening trend
A rage she could not comprehend
Her heart drove her to…

CHORUS
Charlottesville, where she marched for parity
Charlottesville, stood for solidarity
Charlottesville, then came barbarity
Charlottesville, where her young life ended

Verse 2:
Heather left her home headed downtown
Spellbound by the hate she found
Why did they believe what they believed?
And why did they feel so aggrieved
Wearing bigotry on their sleeves?
Her heart led her to…

CHORUS:
Charlottesville, where she marched for parity
Charlottesville, stood for solidarity
Charlottesville, then came barbarity
Charlottesville, where her young life ended

Verse 3:
When the mob answered without words
Waving guns they did prefer
Heather’s final march progressed
Then a man whose soul had been possessed
Mowed her down, may she be blessed
Hearts broken in…

FINAL CHORUS:
Charlottesville, where she marched for parity
Charlottesville, stood for solidarity
Charlottesville, then came barbarity
Charlottesville, where her young life ended
Where her young life ended
“If you’re not outraged, you’re not paying attention.”

This is the release of the sixth song (of eighteen) from the Full Moonalice album: Bird Song. Bird Song is a tribute to Janis Joplin, written by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter. Jerry and Hunter have joined Janis at the great gig in the sky, so our version is a tribute to them, too. The ethereal harmonies of the T Sisters arrangement of Bird Song defines our tribute to three people who inspired us.
