We Are All In This Situation Together – The Virus Respects No Ethnic Group – Please Stop Senseless Assaults on Asian-Americans

Artist’s Statement

“What made me decide to take this approach to my Covid-19 Virus poster design, was the numerous wrongful assaults and angry words spoken to Asian-Americans because of the origin of the virus in China. On the news, I heard the story that an Asian American family that was assaulted and they were not even Chinese Americans, but another Asian ethnic group. All of this news reminded me of the xenophobic things that happened after 9/11, especially the murder of an East-Indian-American Sikh man in Arizona. He was killed because he wore a turban and beard and was mistaken as a terrorist by a hateful redneck, who didn’t know the man was a Sikh. I was thinking about this, just before I chose it as a theme and started drawing. What made me finally to go with this theme, was a news report that a young Chinese American dance instructor was assaulted here in Detroit. I also found out that an average of 100 incidences like this were taking place each week around the country. This is no time for this kind of cruelty, because the whole World has been effected by the virus. We need to care for ALL our neighbors.”
