SUMMARY:Haight Street Art Center presents Lee Conklin: 50 Years of Psychedelic Art
DESCRIPTION:Opening Reception: August 1\, 2018 from 7:00 – 9:00pm \nThroughout its remarkable 50-year span\, Lee Conklin’s career has been well regarded as an essential contribution to the psychedelic poster art movement. Well known for imaginative vision and inventive lettering\, this work demands and rewards prolonged\, patient exploration. These posters often offer voyages—visual trips—containing hidden messages\, elements and value that reveal gradually and perhaps unintentionally. According to Conklin\, “I just start drawing … and sometimes it turns into something.” \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nToday\, Lee Conklin successfully maintains the freehand ethos of his established style but fuses it with the possibilities inherent in digital technologies. Not retro-psychedelic\, this is contemporary psychedelic art of the highest order. \nExhibit runs through September 30\, 2018.

DESCRIPTION:About\n📷: Pete Sears\, Roger McNamee\, John Molo\, Barry Sless. \nMoonalice is a psychedelic\, roots-rock band of seasoned musicians mixing a variety of genres with extended musical improvisations. Everyone is a part of the experience. Moonalice was the brainchild of the great producer\, T Bone Burnett in 2007 because he wanted to create a band with a San Francisco 60’s sound. Moonalice plays mostly original material mixed with some covers\, and during their extended freeform jams the band moves as one\, drawing from many musical genres honed from years of experience playing with various major acts. Every show features an original art poster\, created by a well-known artist\, and with its own unique Moonalice “legend”. A copy of the poster will be given free to all attendees. All Moonalice concerts are broadcast live in HD on the Moonalice Couch Tour and available shortly after their set. \nVideos and posters of all shows are available on moonalice.com and every show poster (each with a unique legend) can be viewed at moonaliceposters.com. \nMoonalice social media reaches over 353\,000 on Facebook and over 67\,000 Twitter followers. \nMoonalice’s hit single “It’s 4:20 Somewhere” has been downloaded over 4.6 million times. \nBand Members\nBarry Sless: lead guitar\, pedal steel guitar\, bass (Phil Lesh & Friends\, David Nelson Band\, Kingfish\, Cowboy Jazz)\nPete Sears: bass\, guitar\, keyboards\, vocals (Doobie Decibel System\, Sam Gopal Dream\, Rod Stewart\, Long John Baldry\, original Jefferson Starship\, Hot Tuna\, Peter Rowan\, Jimi Hendrix\, Jerry Garcia\, Bob Weir\, Phil Lesh & Friends\, Steve Kimock\, David Nelson\, John Lee Hooker and more).\nRoger McNamee: rhythm and lead guitar\, bass\, vocals (Doobie Decibel System (DDS) Duo with Jason Crosby and Doobie Decibel System (DDS) Band with Jason Crosby\, Pete Sears\, Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz and Jay Lane. Drawing from all eras of the Dead\, the band performs two sets of Grateful Dead and JGB classics that retain all the spontaneous exploratory jamming for which the bands were renowned. However\, the music produced is uniquely Cubensis. \nThe group has been acclaimed for giving new life to the Grateful Dead’s material\, bringing in new styles\, new innovations\, and new jam band enthusiasts\, while at the same time remaining loyal to the original music and the original fans. \nCubensis has been pleased to find their most enthusiastic supporters are those who never got a chance to see the Grateful Dead in person\, and wonder what they missed. Seasoned “Deadheads” come out to relive the great shows gone by\, and as a result\, the band is in great demand. \nCubensis was given specific permission by Jerry Garcia to perform the Dead’s music. Garcia’s only request was\, “Do a good job of it.” Ever since\, CUBENSIS has promised authenticity with reverance\, and delivers pure Grateful Dead-inspired music like it was meant to be heard…re-creating the magic\, one show at a time.

SUMMARY:All Access: Exploring Humanism in the Art of Chuck Sperry
DESCRIPTION:All Access: Exploring Humanism in the Art of Chuck Sperry\nSeptember 15 – December 9\, 2018 \nThe Fort Wayne Museum of Art is pleased to celebrate Chuck Sperry’s first museum solo exhibition. Sperry has been preeminent in the rock poster genre since the late 1990s and has largely defined the genre in each decade since with his distinctive style and masterful printing technique. \nSperry has drawn inspiration for this work from the classical Greco-Roman idea of the muses\, and their metaphorical home on Mount Helikon — the source of inspiration for all things art and music. Naiads\, nymphs and muses in their richly patterned floral settings make their way into Sperry’s work. Dripping with brightly colored flowers\, decked in gold and silver textures\, Sperry’s blue-silver muses sing a paean to the long tradition of humanism reactivated in the struggle for social progress\, universal human rights\, a more perfect democracy and the utopian ideals of the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco where Sperry has made his home since 1989. \nSymbolism\, Secession\, ukiyo-e\, and psychedelia blend in Sperry’s flattened\, post-modern figurative art: all potent ingredients Sperry strives self-consciously to re-evaluate for the 21st Century. \nThe exhibit will feature 2 large scale tapestries designed by Sperry\, 25 screen prints on oak panel\, original ink drawings\, and ephemeral color progressives which illuminate Sperry’s unique printing process. \nThis exhibition is organized by the Fort Wayne Museum of Art and its Curator of Contemporary Art Josef Zimmerman. \nExhibition Opening Party: September 14\, 6-9pm\nCelebrate opening weekend of this exhibit and Litmus Test: Works on Paper from the Psychedelic Era with live music\, cash bar\, appetizers\, and face time with the one and only Chuck Sperry! \nRead More

SUMMARY:Haight Street Art Center Presents in San Francisco Ralph Steadman: A Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:Opening November 6\, 2018\nThe Ralph Steadman Retrospective offers phenomenal insights into the genius of one of the world’s most acclaimed artists. Experiencing the 108 original artworks included in this exhibition will take the viewer on a journey through Steadman’s prolific career of more than sixty years; from the sketches he created as a student in the 1950’s to current artworks published in 2017. \nThe Retrospective showcases Steadman’s legendary collaborations with maverick Gonzo journalist\, Hunter S. Thompson; his illustrated literary classics such as Alice in Wonderland\, Treasure Island; and the inventive books he authored such as I Leonardo and The Big I Am. There are also illustrations from his children’s books\, which include No Room to Swing a Cat and That’s My Dad; plus artworks from his travels with Oddbins Wine Merchants. While still contributing regularly to publications such as The New Statesman\, The New Yorker\, the New York Observer\, and The Independent\, last year Ralph Steadman celebrated the release of his most recent book Critical Critters\, featuring 100 new paintings. \nThroughout his working life\, Steadman has strived in his cartoons and artworks to affect and challenge humanity\, generate a dialogue\, and be a voice to rally for truth and positive change. Steadman’s art is brave\, intelligent\, and unrelenting. The exhibition will amaze and inspire both the uninitiated and his most die-hard fans. As Thompson advised in the Steadman illustrated Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas\, “buy the ticket\, take the ride.” \nAudio Guide\nAccompanying the Retrospective is a fascinating audio guide created by Audible and featuring the voices of Ralph Steadman himself\, Anita o’Brien\, the original curator of the show and Tim Robbins\, friend and fan. SUMMARY:Doobie Decibel System Trio 11/21/18 The Chapel\, San Francisco
DESCRIPTION:With Midnight North and Doobie Decibel System (featuring Roger McNamee of Moonalice\, Jason Crosby\, & Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz) with psychedelic liquid lights by Mad Alchemy. \nBuy Tickets \nMidnight North\nIn June of 2017 Midnight North released their third studio album: Under the Lights. On this full length record\, Midnight North left it all on the court. Recorded by David Simon-Baker (Los Lobos\, ALO\, Jackie Greene\, Mother Hips) at the Greene Room and Allegiant Studios\, Under the Lights features their 11 best new tunes. Expect flares of country on tracks like “The Highway Song” and “Greene County”\, tinges of soul on the likes of “Back To California”\, but mostly good solid rock and roll. With strong melodies and stronger harmonies\, for this band it comes down to one thing: the song. \nRead More \nDoobie Decibel System\nAs the Dewey Decimal System organizes library materials by discipline or field of study\, the Doobie Decibel System throws its diverse musical talents together to create riffs and songs that cross genre and generation. On any given night\, Doobie Decibel System play their original songs\, such as “Backlash” and “Wrong Side of The Road” by Crosby and “Live A Little” and “Couple of Puffs” by McNamee\, and dip into rock ‘n’ roll archives playing a variety of classics from The Beatles\, Pink Floyd and The Grateful Dead. The duo’s distinctive style is heard in every song while they continue to surprise the audience by playing improvisations and creating a unique sound that encapsulates their talents and energy. \nRead More
